Driver Insight: Jon Lancaster

Having started his career in Karting, Jon Lancaster has raced in a multitude of different cars with the standout achievement being crowned the European Le Mans champion in 2015. After some unfortunate bad luck with a potential move into the US race scene, Jon battled through adversity for the past 5 years and is back with a vengeance. He's now back in the European Le Mans series, racing for Algarve Pro Racing and has emerged as a keen threat for the podium.

Jon came to us to create a bright and vivid design, that incorporated some classic tartan as a nod to one of his oldest friends, a St. Georges cross on the sides and a touching tribute to his brother Andrew, who tragically passed away in 2010. We fired a few quick questions over to Jon to find out more about his current design and a few from the past.

IDC: What was the first helmet you ever had?

JL: First helmet was an Arai, no idea what model tho!

IDC: What’s the inspiration behind your current helmet?

JL: My design was originally drawn on the kitchen table, I'm proud to be English hence the flag, the original colours were yellow, blue and white for Leeds United. The later changed to the bright orange and lime I have to make it stand out. I used to have the classic Schumacher top but again that changed to show my appreciation for one of my oldest friends/sponsors and all round legend, David Thompson who has travelled the world with me from karting days always with a flat cap in this tartan. On the back is a tribute to my late brother Andy who passed back in 2010, always watching my back!

IDC: What would your ultimate dream helmet design be?

JL: Honestly, I love my design haha its simple but effective, I feel the younger generation have a bit too much going on in their designs, or maybe im getting old haha!

IDC: Who had the most iconic helmet in history?

JL: I guess its a tough call between Senna’s and Schumacher… Both very distinctive, very personal and very patriotic.

IDC: Out of all of your custom helmets, which one means the most to you?

JL: Again with the hard questions! some of my karting ones are very special, GP2 winning helmets, ELMS championship helmet, the list goes on!! Hopefully my latest Image Design Custom painted helmet will take that spot!
